An Amazing Story of Giving

November 18, 2014

27400322_BG3We can all get overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season, but all it takes is an incredible story to remind us the true meaning of the holidays. Susan Perrone, Mayesa’s Sales Manager in Arizona, has one of those stories.

Last March, Susan and her husband were traveling in Costa Rica. Susan lost her hearing aid on the floor of a hotel lobby. Luckily, it was found by Eduardo Chavarria, a local tour guide. Eduardo discovered that the hearing aid belonged to Susan, who was traveling with one of his colleague’s groups. He decided to personally drive the hearing aid to Susan, who by this point was a great distance away.

This act of kindness would be a heartwarming story in and of itself; however it is only the beginning. Eduardo had broken his humerus bone in a car accident more than a year and a half before meeting Susan. The Costa Rican doctor who was supposed to have repaired Eduardo’s arm didn’t do the best job, and Eduardo was left with an arm that was horribly disfigured and had minimal function.

Susan was so touched by Eduardo’s genuine heart, and his willingness to go out of his way for a complete stranger, that she vowed when she returned to the United States, she would find a doctor to fix his arm.

And she did just that. After spending hours on the phone with local charities and medical institutions trying to find someone who could help, she finally found Dr. Brad Bruns of Arizona Bone and Joint Institute. Dr. Bruns performed reconstructive surgery on Eduardo’s arm two weeks ago in Arizona. In an interview with CBS 5AZ, Susan said that she felt that helping Eduardo was “just the right thing to do.”

Eduardo returned to Costa Rica earlier this week. While Susan was sad to see him leave, she is thrilled that he is returning with a new arm. “Eduardo has a 10-year-old son and knowing that he is going to see his father whole again is just unbelievable,” said Susan. She and her husband are planning to visit Eduardo and his family next June.

It is not surprising that Susan followed her heart and reached out to Eduardo. She truly believes in helping others. Mayesa is proud to have her on our team. “I feel good about what I’m doing for Mayesa. I love the product, and the team is so supportive. I am personally invested in helping people discover Mayesa,” said Susan.

Thank you, Susan, for your random act of kindness. You set a great example for all of us.
