Event product on tableGenetically engineered organisms, or GMOs, are a hot topic right now. With so many people, corporations and organizations concerned about GMOs, let’s take a look at exactly what the production and consumption of GMO products mean for you, your family and the environment.

So What Exactly are GMOs?
GMOs are plants or animals whose cells have been artificially manipulated in a lab. A gene is inserted into a plant, for example, to give it specific characteristics. Genetically engineered plants might be created to develop a resistance against insects or to increase nutrients. Some experts feel this will be a way to provide sufficient food for the increasing population of the world. The science of GMOs is relatively new and is thought by other experts to create unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Environmental Impact
Many critics of GMOs are concerned about the very real environmental impact that they may have worldwide. One of the alleged benefits of GMO plants is that they are herbicide resistant, thereby reducing the amount of herbicide used in the agricultural industry. (Herbicides are chemicals that are toxic to plants and get rid of unwanted vegetation). However, it seems that by planting GMO crops, “super weeds” have emerged alongside them. These weeds are also more resistant to herbicides and require even more spraying and the use of even stronger and more toxic chemicals to kill them.

Critics also say that while the biotech industry promised increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition and many other consumer benefits, it seems that the GMOs on the market offer few if any of these traits.

Safe to Eat?
There are many unknowns when it comes to consuming GMOs. Critics say that genetically engineering food can affect its nutritional value and create allergens and toxins in the food. In addition, most developed nations, such as Australia, Japan and all of the countries in the European Union, have very significant restrictions on the production and sale of GMOs. In fact, some countries have outright bans on GMOs.

A concern in the United States is that the regulatory agencies have approved GMOs based on studies that are conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale. Fortunately, countless consumers are taking matters into their own hands and requesting food products be labeled to identify GMOs and many are choosing not to purchase food products that contain GMOS.

Avoiding GMOs
Although labeling GMO food is not mandatory at this time, one way to avoid GMOs is to purchase organic products. According to the Non-GMO Project, a non-profit organization committed to preserving the non-GMO food supply, GMOs are prohibited in organic products.

Many food and beverage companies, such as Mayesa, are proud to be non-GMO. In addition, it is not just the food and beverage industry that is speaking out for mandatory labeling of GMO products. This issue is important to all brands that are committed to sustainable and transparent business practices.
